Sensational 7 Q & A with Carrie Jones!

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to hang out with your favorite author(s)? In an attempt to get a better understanding of authors, my Sensational Seven Q & A takes a closer or more personal look at these authors to give you a glimpse of the personalities behind the writing of your favorite books.

“Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the book; a personality which, by birth and quality, is pledged to the doctrines there set forth, and which exists to see and state things so, and not otherwise.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Carrie Jones is an award-winning author who recently graduated from Vermont College's MFA program. In addition to penning Need, she is the author of the YA novels Girl, Hero; Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape); and Tips on Having a Gay (Ex)-Boyfriend, which was nominated for a YALSA Quick Pick and won the Maine Literary Award as well as the Independent Book Publisher Award (the IPPY) . Her upcoming picture book Moe Berg, the Spy who Played Baseball (from David Godine) is being illustrated by Barry Moser. Carrie lives in Ellsworth, Maine. Her current YA novel Captivate is in stores today.

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
When I was a kid I always thought that I'd want to go back to Nazi Germany and do a Dexter on Adolf Hitler or keep the United States from passing out those blankets contaminated with Small Pox. I still would like to do those things actually, but I guess in a not-save-the-world-being-selfish-Carrie kind of way I'd like to go back to high school and tell myself not to get that perm that made my hair all crispy, and not freak out about getting an 80 on a Calculus test because Mr. Cygan was totally going to give me an A anyway because I made him a birthday cake.

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Evil pixies make life Hell for Zara.

Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
I don't have a favorite book because I feel so guilty if I have favorites. Right now I'm reading OUTLANDER and the Scottish hottie guy in it, Jaime? Yeah... totally love him... reminds me of my main man, actually.

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?
Hermione. She's smart. She's magical. She's passionate about causes. She has that cool hair.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you / Why?
This would be a VERY bad movie. It would be such a horrible movie I'd hate to make any actress play me but... um...um... someone cute and smart...um...Natalie Portman. There! *feeling triumphant*

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
Carrie Exists... because I do. I mean, nothing else really explains it that well.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Neurotic Writer Person Loves Strudel and Dogs

Bonus

**Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?**

Well, right now I'm working on book three of the NEED series (CAPTIVATE is coming out January 5th) and unfortunately things pretty much stink for Zara. That's all the spoilers my publisher will allow me to tell. And for me? I'm going on a book tour in February, which means I get to leave Maine in the middle of winter. SCORE! As long as they don't send me to the Arctic Circle I am psyched no offense to the Arctic.

Thanks Carrie for stopping by!

  1. Those were great questions! I loved it. She's cute and funny! Now I'm wishing I could go back in time and stop them from passing out those small pox blankets. I would be afraid, though, to "do a Dexter on Hitler." How would it change our world for the worse today to not have had had him? Or maybe it would change things for the better - but how can we know?
So cool it would be to have Natalie Portman play you!
