Review: The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
Publisher: Random House Children's Books
Pub. Date: March 2009
Age Range: Young Adult
320pp

In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

Mini Review
First let me start by saying it took me some time to write this review, I could not come up with words to do it justice. Carrie Ryan did a fantastic job with her first novel. The writing was terrific and the plot and characters were well developed. I was mesmerized through Mary’s observation of romance, family, friendship, and the unconsecrated. This novel grabs you by the teeth and hangs on until the end.

So, imagine how thrilled I was when I found out there is a second book in this series called The Dead-Tossed Waves and it comes out spring 2010. I can’t wait to read more of Carrie Ryan’s Novels.

  2. I get what you mean, about how some novels blow you away so much that it's hard to review them adequately! Sounds like a good read.

  10. I read this also and felt the same. Carrie did a great job with the unconsecrated (I kept looking for the word "zombies" while reading). I'm looking forward to see what happens next with Mary.

  14. I too find it hard to review books that I love. It's much easier to review the ones I have bad things to say about... oh well.

  23. I have read reviews for this book on a couple of other blogs, after first learning about it in the Globe & Mail's Book section. It sounds like an amazing story, and the reviews seem to confirm my suspicions. I really have my fingers crossed to win this one. :)

Oh yeah, since I'm replying to all six reviews, I suppose I should point out my own blog is listed in my profile. Got this blog added to my blogroll in perpetuity now. :)
