Sensational 7 Q & A with Jen Nadol!

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to hang out with your favorite author(s)? In an attempt to get a better understanding of authors, my Sensational Seven Q & A takes a closer or more personal look at these authors to give you a glimpse of the personalities behind the writing of your favorite books.

“Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the book; a personality which, by birth and quality, is pledged to the doctrines there set forth, and which exists to see and state things so, and not otherwise.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Jen Nadol grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania, the hometown of John Updike, Taylor Swift, and the now-defunct Monopoly railroad. She has a BA in literature from American University and has lived in Washington DC, Boston, and New York City. She currently resides in a 150-year-old farmhouse in Westchester County, New York, with her husband and three young sons and is at work on her next two related novels. She has no paranormal abilities and is pretty happy about that. The Mark is in stores today!

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
Probably early New York City. It’d be so fascinating to see Manhattan as mostly farmland and walk around when it was just a little town, with a real wall on Wall Street and stuff. Or maybe go a little later and check out the Astors' and Rockfellers' mansions before they got turned into clubs or stores. Assuming they invited me in, of course.

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Should you tell someone today’s their last?

Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
So many favorite books – The Stand, The Last Ship, White Oleander, A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Secret History…these are just some off the top of my head. There are probably about twenty others.

Most of what I read doesn’t have a strong romance element so a fictional crush is pretty tough. It would definitely be on a Mr. Darcy type – that serious, smart, sort-of-superior kind of guy.

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?

Without spending days thinking about it – because this’d really be kind of a big decision - I’m going to go with Frannie Goldsmith from The Stand. There’s something appealing about starting all over again and by the end of the book, she’s got a pretty good set-up.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you /Why?
I’ve always liked Winona Ryder and she hasn’t gotten much work since she got caught shoplifting (NB: we look nothing alike)

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
STOP FIGHTING! Spend a day with my three kids and this will need no explanation.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Busy, happy and very, very, very fortunate.
