Guest Post: Jennifer Murgia (Author of Angel Star)

I want to thank Jennifer Murgia for stopping by today to tell us about Angels in fiction. Angel Star, her debut novel is in stores now.

Please welcome Jennifer everyone!

ANGELS IN FICTION

Hi Tina, thanks for having me guest blog today!

I’m sure everyone has heard the news . . . angels are the new vampires! I personally am still quite the vamp lover, so I’m not ready to say they’ve slid over to the sidelines quite yet. I think the transition from vampires to angels lately in the Young Adult market is a natural and possibly predictable evolution. Much like history, there is a time and cycle for everything. Perhaps this is the next phase of “natural selection” for fictional creatures? After years of inundating the market with beautiful blood-suckers, it’s time to focus on a new immortal. If we compare the vampire to the angel, it’s not hard to find that we are ready to fall in love with the opposite sort of creature. Instead of darkness and death, why not find ourselves turning toward inspiration and light? Why not focus on a being that holds the possibility of truly existing? After all, immersing ourselves into the fictional realms and catching a glimpse of something tangible is what creates a more possible world, right? Angels are beautiful, and touching to the soul. They help create a peaceful blanket to our weary, stressful lives and escaping within the pages with one for a few hours or a day, is certainly inviting. I think subconsciously, the impression of an angel calms a reader, without them even realizing it. The mere topic erases tension and invites warm thoughts of wings and peace.

But hold on there. . . I’m not talking about those sweet little cherubic guys with the harps. The angels of today are incredible and PERFECT in every way and dare I even say they are extremely steamy?? They capture our hearts with a different temptation. Oh, yeah. Those are the angels I mean. So yes, taking a break is nice. And don’t worry fellow vampire lovers. They again will have their day. Like everything in life, the vampires we love will retreat into the shadows until the time for them comes again and in the meantime we will devour anything about the current immortal at hand until it’s time to trade places once again - unless of course you find angels to be hotter than vampires!

  17. Angels are so fascinating. Although I have heard that angels are the new vampires, I still haven't found proof. Vamps will probably have a few more years until angels really soar!

  19. I like both angels and vamps. The nice thing about angels is that they can be written so that they are a warm and comforting presence, whereas vamps usually always have that little edge to them.

  23. I agree Angels are sexier than vampires. I think vampires have been used a little too much in literature as of late. Thanks for the incredible thought provoking post!
