Review: Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson

CLAIRE DE LUNE by Christine Johnson
Pub. Date: May 2010
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Format: Hardcover, 336pp
Age Range: Young Adult

Torn between two destinies?

Claire is having the perfect sixteenth birthday. Her pool party is a big success, and gorgeous Matthew keeps chatting and flirting with her as if she's the only girl there. But that night, she discovers something that takes away all sense of normalcy: she's a werewolf.

As Claire is initiated into the pack of female werewolves, she must deal not only with her changing identity, but also with a rogue werewolf who is putting everyone she knows in danger. Claire's new life threatens her blossoming romance with Matthew, whose father is leading the werewolf hunt. Now burdened with a dark secret and pushing the boundaries of forbidden love, Claire is struggling to feel comfortable in either skin. With her lupine loyalty at odds with her human heart, she will make a choice that will change her forever?

Newcomer, Christine Johnson enchants readers with a daring tale of werewolves packed with delicious intrigue.

Most sixteen year olds revel in the surprise of getting a new car on their birthday but Claire Benoit is nothing like her fellow teens. She gets the shocker of her life – she’s a werewolf. Claire has to come to grips with the fact that she comes from a long line of shape-shifters. I was so thrilled that I didn’t have to go through a dragged out battle of Claire denying her lineage, however impossible it may have seemed at the time. Soon the pages were flying to see how Claire would handle her new fate. What intrigued me most about this novel? The werewolves are all female. This novel has an interesting take on werewolf mythology and I enjoyed the efforts that Johnson put forth in this novel.

Claire was a well likeable character and her relationship with Matthew was just as enticing. Blossoming young love always has a place in my heart. The forbidden love angle only notched up my love for these characters even more. Claire had some hard choices to make concerning her loyalty to her pack over her relationship with Matthew. Her bravery only made me like her even more.

CLAIRE DE LUNE is a welcomed addition in the YA paranormal genre. I think readers will enjoy Johnson’s spin on werewolves. I look forward to reading more of Johnson’s works. Here’s to hoping for a sequel! Great debut by Christine Johnson!

  1. At first I wasn't real interested in this one just becuase I'm getting burnt out on all the shape shifter book, but I've read several good reviews, so I might look into it. So glad it doesn't have the pages of angst as the character denies and frets over it - just moves more into the accepting and dealing! Oh and, I do like the cover!

  8. I'm really loving werewolves right now! This book sounds extra awesome. And it's so encouraging to hear that she has the shock of learning & then just gets on with it! I know everyone can't handle it well, but on the other hand, I'm not interested in reading about a character constantly angsting about something they can't change.

Thanks for the review (and contest!)

  27. I've been interested in this book for awhile now. I loved the title and, being a huge fan of Twilight and the small role Debussy plays, the title caught my attention. I really liked the idea of the werewolf aspect in this book and the fact that it entwines forbidden young love...well, how can I not want to read this book? :) Thanks for the review. I will definitely have to read this book!

  36. This is one that keeps popping up in the blogosphere right now. It seems the genre is primed for the paranormal oriented release and so it would only make sense. Why do I want to read it though? Well, for starters the reviews I've read thus far have been pretty good. (score 1) Secondly, I haven't read any more of the werewolf genre in particular (apart from Twilight) so I am curious to see if thie para creature can hold it's own in my reading world. Thanks for sharing....and happy reading!
