Sensational 7 Q & A with Tate Hallaway!

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to hang out with your favorite author(s)? In an attempt to get a better understanding of authors, my Sensational Seven Q & A takes a closer or more personal look at these authors to give you a glimpse of the personalities behind the writing of your favorite books.

“Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the book; a personality which, by birth and quality, is pledged to the doctrines there set forth, and which exists to see and state things so, and not otherwise.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

A Scorpio with a Leo Rising, Tate Hallaway is an amateur astrologer and practicing Witch. Tate has been a fan of vampire fiction since she first read Poppy Z. Brite in high school. Her first short fiction acceptance was to a vampire ‘zine called Nocturnal Ecstasy Vampire Coven. Tate lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota with three black cats.

ALMOST TO DIE FOR is in a stores today!

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
I would only go if I could take a guest, and then I would take my six year old son to the continent of “Gondwana” during the Carboniferous Period, 355 million years ago so that he could see the giant millipede arthropleura for himself. Perhaps we’d pack a picnic lunch and see how many ugly, gigantic bugs would try to steal our pie.

If I had to go by myself, I’d like to spend exactly three seconds in the early-Cretaceous/late-Jurassic so I could see whether or not dinosaurs did, in fact, have feathers. I’d be particularly curious to see if paleontologists have T-Rex’s arms on backwards, and if she flapped her useless forearms like a super-sized, murderous chicken. Because then I’d thumb my nose at her, and promptly disappear back to the modern era for a lovely pot pie of her descendents. Yum! (You have heard, right, that scientists found T-Rex DNA and say that its genetic markers are most closely related to modern chickens? How the mighty have fallen, eh?)

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Short. Funny.

Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
Trent the Uncatchable from THE LONG RUN by Daniel Keys Moran (Bantam, 1989), a science fiction novel I’m currently re-reading. I have a huge thing for fictional thieves and I love a good caper story/movie, like “The Italian Job” or “The Good Thief.” If I had to pick someone from this decade that your readers might actually know, I’d have to say Spock from the new Star Trek movie… he’s hot in a green-blooded alien kind of way, you know?

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?
Wonder Woman because she’s an Amazon princess who could kick Superman’s butt back to Krypton.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you/ Why?
Matthew Broderick. He’s about the right height, has my haircut, and we’re close to the same age. He’d have to wear a fat suit, but, you know, I think the guy could use the work.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
WEIRD, BUT COMPELLING, which is how my first agent described my writing. It fits.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Short. Funny.

Bonus:

**Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?**
Um, okay, well, let's see. I'm contracted for two more books in the vampire princess of Saint Paul series (of which ALMOST TO DIE FOR) is the first, so I'll be starting work on book 2 soon. I've given my agent a couple of proposals for adult series, including one I like to call my non-vampire vampire book in which we follow the "support staff" of a traditional vampire... the heroine is the vamp's accountant and she uncovers a financial mystery and hilarious hijinx ensue. We'll see what becomes of those. Otherwise, people can check in on me at my various blogs: http://tatehallaway.blogspot.com or a group blog I run with my writers' group http://wyrdsmiths.blogspot.com/

Thanks for stopping by Tate!

  1. I LOVE this Q&A! Man does Tate have spunk! I am adding the book to my wish list, but wanted to comment on the Matthew Broderick thing. He really wouldn't need a fat suit, I mean, have you seen him lately. Ferris Bueller took a lot more than a day off.... LOL
