Review: Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

RAISED BY WOLVES by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Pub. Date: June 2010
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Format: Hardcover, 432pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, fifteen-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn't mean that she's averse to breaking a rule or two.

But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new teen locked in a cage in her guardian's basement, and witnesses him turn into a wolf before her eyes, the horrific memories of her parents' murders return. Bryn becomes obsessed with getting her questions answered, and Chase is the only one who can provide the information she needs.

But in her drive to find the truth, will Bryn push too far beyond the constraints of the pack, forcing her to leave behind her friends, her family, and the identity that she's shaped?
With so many werewolf books out right now, some of them are starting to blend in together. Barnes brings a refreshing take on the life of the pack and what it means to be a part of one. The fact that Bryn survived a werewolf attack and was taking in and raised by wolves makes this story so enticing. I could not put this book down!

For Bryn to be surrounded by nonhumans, whom are more superior than her with their strengths (hearing, speed, healing, and strength, long life span) - this girl will not be cowed. She's strong and feisty, and will do whatever to protect her own, even if her actions could be fatal (consequences be damned). I love Bryn's strength and how she pulled through under the circumstances. You have to be strong to deal with what she dealt with (her past and present). Ali, Bryn's adopted mother is one hell of a woman too! She would do anything to protect Bryn, even if it means putting Bryn above the pack. Then there's Chase, he's so protective of Bryn and considering the circumstances that brought him into Bryn's life, I couldn't help but go goo-eyed over him. Barnes created some unforgettable characters. I could immerse myself into her world over and over again. The whole pack dynamics was fascinating.

I know I will be reading more books by this author. If you are a fan of Patricia Briggs's Mercedes Thompson Series, then you will definitely enjoy Raised by Wolves. I can't wait to see what the next installment has in store for Bryn. This book was such a great read, I was still thinking about it long after I finished it. Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? Let me just tell ya, this book is freaking AWESOME!
