Review: Timepiece by Myra McEntire

TIMEPIECE by Myra McEntire
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Publication date: 6/12/2012
Pages: 336 Series: Hourglass
Series , #2
Source: Bought
Kaleb Ballard was never supposed to be able to see ripples—cracks in time. Are Kaleb’s powers expanding, or is something very wrong? Before Kaleb can find out, Jonathan Landers, the man who tried to murder his father, reappears. Why is he back, and what, or whom, does he want?

In the wake of Landers’s return, the Hourglass organization is offered an ultimatum by a mysterious man. Either they find Landers and the research he has stolen on people who might carry the time gene, or time will be altered—with devastating results for the people Kaleb loves most.

Now Kaleb, Emerson, Michael, and the other Hourglass recruits have no choice but to use their extraordinary powers to find Landers. But where do they even start? And when? Even if they succeed, just finding him may not be enough. . . . The follow-up to Hourglass, Timepiece blends the paranormal, science-fiction, mystery, and suspense genres into a nonstop thrill ride where every second counts.
HOURGLASS was one of my favorite reads of 2011 and I couldn’t wait to delve back into the wondrous world that McEntire had created. I fell in love with the characters and after some shocking revelations; I had to find out what would happen next. This series is unlike any that I’ve read and it’s so refreshing to read more about the Hourglass.

One of the reasons that I enjoy this series as mentioned above is because of the lovable characters. One character in particular immediately grabbed my attention and became one of my favorites. So guess how excited I was to learn that this book was written in his perspective. Kaleb is one hot tamale! He embodies what I love in fictional characters. He has the bad boy, tortured soul factor which I eat up every time. It was great to see things through his eyes; it made me fall for him all over again.

We learn so many things in this book about the Hourglass and its members. There are consequences that come into play as a result of Emerson’s decisions to go back and change things in the first installment which opens up a whole can of possibilities some not so good. This book wrapped up nicely but I know the next installment is going to be a whopper just by the revelation that was revealed in the end. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Guest Post: Myra McEntire (Author of Hourglass)

Please welcome Myra McEntire as she shares with readers about the local legends from the town Ivy Springs is based on.

Myra McEntire knows the words to every R and B hit of the last decade, but since she lives in the country music capital of America where her lyrical talents go sadly unappreciated, she chose to channel her mad word skills into creating sultry Southern timeslip novels.

But if you catch her at a signing, she can probably be convinced to rap with you anyway.

HOURGLASS is her first novel. It will be released June 14, 2011!

Ivy Springs is based on Franklin, Tennessee. It is rich in Civil War history and Victorian architecture.

Franklin is very walkable, much like Ivy Springs.

Windows like these play very prominently into the first chapter of HOURGLASS...

Puckett's Grocery is a landmark business, and I chose to model Murphy's Law Coffee after it!

I can just see Lily and Em at one of these cafe tables!

Here's another great site about Franklin:

Review: Hourglass by Myra McEntire

HOURGLASS by Myra McEntire
Pub. Date: June 2011
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Format: Hardcover , 400pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Publisher (ARC)
One hour to rewrite the past . . .

For seventeen-year-old Emerson Cole, life is about seeing what isn’t there: swooning Southern Belles; soldiers long forgotten; a haunting jazz trio that vanishes in an instant. Plagued by phantoms since her parents’ death, she just wants the apparitions to stop so she can be normal. She’s tried everything, but the visions keep coming back.

So when her well-meaning brother brings in a consultant from a secretive organization called the Hourglass, Emerson’s willing to try one last cure. But meeting Michael Weaver may not only change her future, it may change her past.

Who is this dark, mysterious, sympathetic guy, barely older than Emerson herself, who seems to believe every crazy word she says? Why does an electric charge seem to run through the room whenever he’s around? And why is he so insistent that he needs her help to prevent a death that never should have happened?

Full of atmosphere, mystery, and romance, Hourglass merges the very best of the paranormal and science-fiction genres in a seductive, remarkable young adult debut.

Addictive and refreshing, this time-traveling romance had me glued to its pages right down to the very last. HOURGLASS was a delightful surprise. I got so much more than what I expected - I was utterly captivated.

What's not to love about Emerson? This girl is a fighter. She's had to endure so much since seeing her so called ghosts. Coping with the death of loved ones, being committed into an institution, and now she must face the fact that maybe she's not crazy after all. With aid from gorgeous heart-throb Michael, Em finally understands her gift. The chemistry between these two sizzles. Em had me cracking up with what she calls her "edit button." When things came out of her mouth unfiltered, especially her thoughts about Michael, I was constantly laughing out loud.

I enjoyed reading about some of the secondary characters and their abilities. One character in particular captured my heart. The ever charming Kaleb, who’s also Michael's best friend, was a constant joy. With the time traveling elements, sizzling chemistry between the characters, and the special abilities that the surrounded the Hourglass inhabitants, at times I forgot I was reading a book. It was quite the page turner for me. I can't wait for the sequel!

Sensational 7 Q & A with Myra McEntire (Author of Hourglass)!

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to hang out with your favorite author(s)? In an attempt to get a better understanding of authors, my Sensational Seven Q & A takes a closer or more personal look at these authors to give you a glimpse of the personalities behind the writing of your favorite books.

“Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the book; a personality which, by birth and quality, is pledged to the doctrines there set forth, and which exists to see and state things so, and not otherwise.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
1816, to the Villa Diodati with Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley and gang. Oh, to be a Romantic Poet!

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Southern time travel with a snarky twist.
Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
Favorite Book: Wizard of Oz Fictional Crush: I have a thing for Holly Black's Cassel. Oh, and Sarah Rees Brennan's Nick.

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?
Hermione Granger. I'd love to live in that world, and to be as smart and honorable as she is.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play thelead role as you/ Why?

Tina Fey. I think why should be obvious. (The snark and the glasses!)

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
Occasionally Inappropriate - because it's true.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Crazy, hopeful, blessed, honest, loved, loving, and (trying to always be) kind.

Bonus:

**Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?**
I have just turned in the sequel to HOURGLASS, and I'm awaiting revisions! Brainstorming a few unrelated ideas as well!
