Spotlight: When Life Happened by Jewel E. Ann

When Life Happened by Jewel E. Ann
Publisher: Jewel E. Ann
Publication date: 06/05/2017
Parker Cruse despises cheaters. It might have something to do with her boyfriend sleeping with her twin sister.
After a wedding day prank involving a strong laxative, that ends the already severed relationship between the twins, Parker decides to grow up and act twenty-six.

Step One: Move out of her parents’ house.

Step Two: Find a job.

Opportunity strikes when she meets her new neighbor, Gus Westman. He’s an electrician with Iowa farm-boy values and a gift for saying her name like it’s a dirty word.

He also has a wife.
Sabrina Westman, head of a successful engineering firm, hires Parker as her personal assistant. Driven to be the best assistant ever, Parker vows to stay focused, walk the dog, go to the dry cleaners, and not kiss Gus—again.

Step Three: Don’t judge.

Step Four: Remember— when life happens, it does it in a heartbeat.
"Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's husband."  This book was so unexpected and I couldn't have imagined where Parker's life would have taken her just by reading the synopsis. I loved everything about this book. It gave me all the feels that I look for in books in this genre. Once I started, it was impossible to see where Parker's journey would take her. I laughed, I cried, and I was angry too.  This book is everything!

I love this book that I had to give it a spotlight so readers can delve in and take notice of the wonderfully, amazing  journey, and surprises that this book throws at you. If you're ready to be wrapped up in a book that holds on til the very end then look no further, this book has it all.

You can read an exclusive of chapter one here.

Spotlight: Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Publication date: 09/0/2015
My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.
With the much anticipated movie release, I had to hurry up and read this book. I'd heard so many great things about it and I finally stopped what I was doing to immerse myself in the story. I enjoyed reading about Maddie and Olly. I'm sure I'm not the only one but that bundt cake scene was hilarious! From the cute drawings, diagrams, and the text messages between Maddy and Olly, I appreciated how their relationship progressed. I couldn't get enough of them. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was such a sweet story and I'm so excited to see the movie this weekend. Who else is going out to see the movie?

Check out the movie trailer!

Review: Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han

Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han

Lara Jean’s letter-writing days aren’t over in this surprise follow-up to the New York Times bestselling To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You.

Lara Jean is having the best senior year a girl could ever hope for. She is head over heels in love with her boyfriend, Peter; her dad’s finally getting remarried to their next door neighbor, Ms. Rothschild; and Margot’s coming home for the summer just in time for the wedding.

But change is looming on the horizon. And while Lara Jean is having fun and keeping busy helping plan her father’s wedding, she can’t ignore the big life decisions she has to make. Most pressingly, where she wants to go to college and what that means for her relationship with Peter. She watched her sister Margot go through these growing pains. Now Lara Jean’s the one who’ll be graduating high school and leaving for college and leaving her family—and possibly the boy she loves—behind.

When your heart and your head are saying two different things, which one should you listen to?
I blew right through this series. I read the first back when it came out so I re-read it so I could refresh my memory before I delved into the other books. This is such a heartfelt and endearing series. I had so many nostalgic moments while reading this book. This book is so relatable and I found myself wanting to know more and more about what happens with the characters as they embark on the next chapter in their lives.

There were so many “Oh Lara Jean” and “Oh Peter” moments. Lara Jean is such a quirky and cute character. I had so many laugh out loud moments with this series. I’m actually sad to see it end. To be honest, If Jenny Han decides to write more books with Lara Jean, I’ll be there ready to buy it. I love the family dynamics. Kitty was such a character. I enjoyed reading about their lives and their interactions which warmed my heart. This was such a great series and I’m going to miss it. I don’t know, I feel like I just lost a friend. That’s how connected I felt to these characters.

Review: Black Iris by Leah Raeder

BLACK IRIS  by Leah Raeder
Publisher: Atria Books
Publication date: 4/28/2015
Pages: 384
Source: NetGalley
The next dark and sexy romantic suspense novel from the USA TODAY bestselling author of Unteachable, which was praised for its “lush, haunting prose, deft storytelling, and scorching sensuality” (M. Pierce, bestselling author of the Night Owl trilogy), and called “one of the best forbidden romances” (Lauren Blakely, New York Times bestselling author).
“Love is not a thing that we create. It’s an undoing.”
It only took one moment of weakness for Laney Keating’s world to fall apart. One stupid gesture for a hopeless crush. Then the rumors began. Slut, they called her. Queer. Psycho. Mentally ill, messed up, so messed up even her own mother decided she wasn’t worth sticking around for.
If Laney could erase that whole year, she would. College is her chance to start with a clean slate.
She’s not looking for new friends, but they find her: charming, handsome Armin, the only guy patient enough to work through her thorny defenses—and fiery, filterless Blythe, the bad girl and partner in crime who has thorns of her own.
But Laney knows nothing good ever lasts. When a ghost from her past resurfaces—the bully who broke her down completely—she decides it’s time to live up to her own legend. And Armin and Blythe are going to help.
Which was the plan all along.
Because the rumors are true. Every single one. And Laney is going to show them just how true.
She’s going to show them all.
After reading Unteachable, I knew Raeder was an author to look out for. She can tackle any subject matter and weave it into every cell of your body and make you believe that you’re living that character’s life. Raeder has a way with words.  Her writing ensnared me and I had to keep turning the pages to see how Laney’s story would unravel.

I loved how this book was laid out in past and present tense, it just made the story more compelling as I got an up-close and personal look inside Laney’s head and how her experiences led me on a whirlwind of emotions while wandering would happen next.

This book was dark, twisted, and emotionally beautiful - everything I love about new-adult.  With impeccable writing and great characterization, Black Iris is an experience I won’t forget.

Reveiw: Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley

GRAFFITI MOON by Cath Crowley

Format: HC
Pages: 272
Age range: 14 years

Senior year is over, and Lucy has the perfect way to celebrate: tonight, she's going to find Shadow, the mysterious graffiti artist whose work appears all over the city. He's out there somewhere—spraying color, spraying birds and blue sky on the night—and Lucy knows a guy who paints like Shadow is someone she could fall for. Really fall for. Instead, Lucy's stuck at a party with Ed, the guy she's managed to avoid since the most awkward date of her life. But when Ed tells her he knows where to find Shadow, they're suddenly on an all-night search around the city. And what Lucy can't see is the one thing that's right before her eyes.
This book took me by surprise with its authentic characters and beautiful writing style. It was interesting to get inside Lucy’s and Ed's heads and experience their hardships and love of art. These characters are relatable and so full of life that you can't help but root for them.

I enjoyed the setting of this book. It was intriguing to learn about the different culture, from the way the characters spoke and their backgrounds. It made me want to visit Australia that much more. Ed is so talented and it was the waiting to find out - in that exact moment - when Lucy realized who he was that kept me turning the pages. These two, I thought were perfect for each other - they had so much in common. I enjoyed reading about them.

GRAFFITI MOON is so different from what I'm used to reading but I found it to be immensely enjoyable. I had a few laughs and I also enjoyed the poetry scattered throughout the book. I read this book in one sitting if that tells you anything. Great read!

Review: Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez

VIRTUOSITY by Jessica Martinez
Pub. Date: October 2011
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Format: Hardcover , 304pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Publisher (ARC)
Now is not the time for Carmen to fall in love. And Jeremy is hands-down the wrong guy for her to fall for. He is infuriating, arrogant, and the only person who can stand in the way of Carmen getting the one thing she wants most: to win the prestigious Guarneri competition. Carmen’s whole life is violin, and until she met Jeremy, her whole focus was winning. But what if Jeremy isn’t just hot...what if Jeremy is better ?

Carmen knows that kissing Jeremy can’t end well, but she just can’t stay away. Nobody else understands her—or riles her up—like he does. Still, she can’t trust him with her biggest secret: She is so desperate to win she takes antianxiety drugs to perform, and what started as an easy fix has become a hungry addiction. Carmen is sick of not feeling anything onstage, and even sicker of always doing what she’s told, doing what’s expected.

Sometimes, being on top just means you have a long way to fall....

With A perfect blend of drama, romance, and music, VIRTUOSITY lulled me into its pages. I enjoyed the whole concept of this book. The characters lived and breathed music and Martinez depicted every emotion in such a way that it was palpable. I felt the intensity of the music and its impact on Carmen’s life; I actually wanted to sit front row and center and experience the music.

Carmen’s lead an interesting life; she’s won a Grammy, and she’s considered one of the best violinists. But with the Guarneri competition looming over her head and the expectations that come with that, Carmen’s not so certain that she can beat the competition. Jeremy King is everything that Carmen is not but he does understand what she’s going through. As their relationship start off as just a curiosity of the competition, things start to change in Carmen’s life. She’s finally decided to stand up for herself and do what she wants no matter the results. I never would have expected this book to play out the way it did but it certainly packed a major punch as to what would become of these talented violinists. This book sheds light on child prodigies and the expectations that come with being the best.

Overall, this book was a nice surprise and a great read if you are a lover of music. I was thoroughly entertained and glad to see that this book was a bit unpredictable. The characters were a joy and the music that lived in their hearts played on to the very end.

Review: The Beginning of After by Jennifer Castle

THE BEGINNING OF AFTER by Jennifer Castle
Pub. Date: September 2011
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
Format: Hardcover , 432pp
Age Range: 12 and up
Source: NetGalley

Anyone who’s had something truly crappy happen to them will tell you: It’s all about Before and After. What I’m talking about here is the ka-pow, shake-you-to-your-core-and-turn-your-bones-to-plastic kind of crappy.

Sixteen-year-old Laurel’s world changes instantly when her parents and brother are killed in a terrible car accident. Behind the wheel is the father of her bad-boy neighbor, David Kaufman, whose mother is also killed. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Laurel navigates a new reality in which she and her best friend grow apart, boys may or may not be approaching her out of pity, overpowering memories lurk everywhere, and Mr. Kaufman is comatose but still very much alive. Through it all there is David, who swoops in and out of Laurel’s life and to whom she finds herself attracted against her better judgment. She will forever be connected to him by their mutual loss—a connection that will change them both in unexpected ways.

Jennifer Castle’s debut novel is a heart-wrenching, surprisingly witty testament to how drastically life can change in the span of a single moment.

The Beginning of After is a touching debut! Filled with beautiful moments of love and loss, this novel was truly palpable. I never know what to expect reading novels that could quite possibly be emotional reads. Sometimes it's hit or miss with me but Castle's writes in such away that she captures every detail which pulled at my heart strings. As with any book that can pull me in emotionally, I can't help but give it high praise.

After tragedy strikes, both Laurel & David are about to embark on an emotional journey that could quite change their lives forever. While each character has their own internal struggle and guilt to deal with, they are tied together through their losses and grow closer together in there grief. This book makes you laugh and cry and I empathized with them and just wanted the characters to heal after their tragedy.

Castle blew me away with her writing and character development. If this book is anything to go by, then whatever Castle writes next, I will be picking up to read. Great debut!

Review: Love Story by Jennifer Echols

LOVE STORY by Jennifer Echols
Pub. Date: July 2011
Publisher: Gallery/MTV Books
Format: Paperback , 256pp
Source: Publisher
SHE’S WRITING ABOUT HIM. HE’S WRITING ABOUT HER. AND EVERYBODY IS READING BETWEEN THE LINES.

For Erin Blackwell, majoring in creative writing at the New York City college of her dreams is more than a chance to fulfill her ambitions—it’s her ticket away from the tragic memories that shadow her family’s racehorse farm in Kentucky. But when she refuses to major in business and take over the farm herself someday, her grandmother gives Erin’s college tuition and promised inheritance to their maddeningly handsome stable boy, Hunter Allen. Now Erin has to win an internship and work late nights at a local coffee shop to make her own dreams a reality. She should despise Hunter . . . so why does he sneak into her thoughts as the hero of her latest writing assignment?

Then, on the day she’s sharing that assignment with her class, Hunter walks in. He’s joining her class. And after he reads about himself in her story, her private fantasies about him must be painfully clear. She only hopes to persuade him not to reveal her secret to everyone else. But Hunter devises his own creative revenge, writing sexy stories that drive the whole class wild with curiosity and fill Erin’s heart with longing. Now she’s not just imagining what might have been. She’s writing a whole new ending for her romance with Hunter . . . except this story could come true.
Mini Review
This book took me by surprise. I know it’s a Jennifer Echols book right? I should not be surprised. But, this book was so different. This book immediately captured my attention. The opening of the book starts off with a story that Erin has written for her creative writing class and I was so into it that I didn’t want it to end. All I could think about is how Jennifer should write a historical romance novel. I would definitely buy it. She could write any type of story and I would buy it.

What I enjoyed the most about LOVE STORY was the premise. Here you have a creative writing class with characters writing about each other and through their stories, you learn more and more about them. The fact that some of the stories were quite hot was a plus too. One thing that I can say is that Jennifer writes the best relationships with great male leads. I don’t know how you cannot fall in love with her characters.

I look forward to reading anything this author writes and that says a lot. If you’re huge Echols fan like me then you won’t be disappointed with LOVE STORY.

Review: Sometimes It Happens by Lauren Barnholdt

SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS by Lauren Barnholdt
Pub. Date: July 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Format: Hardcover , 320pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Publisher ARC
On the last day of her junior year, Hannah's boyfriend Ryan dumped her. Facing a summer of loneliness, Hannah turns to her best friend Ava for comfort. Ava does what BFFs do: she stays by Hannah's side...until it's time for Ava to head up to Maine for the summer. Also left behind is Ava's boyfriend, Noah, who's such a great guy he gets Hannah a job at the diner he waits tables at. Slowly, Hannah comes out of her funk thanks to Noah's good conversation and their fun times at the diner. But things get complicated when their friendship turns into attraction—and one night, into a passionate kiss. The novel opens on the first day of senior year; the day Hannah is going to see Ava, Ryan, and Noah all in one place. Over the course of the day secrets and betrayals are revealed, and alliances are broken and reformed. In the end, everyone is paired up once again, but not the way you might think...

Mini Review
Talk about a stressful first day back to school as a senior - drama, drama, drama, and more drama. That pretty much sums up this book. I know we’ve all had some type of drama in high school but Hannah, the poor girl is coming unhinged by the minutes. First she gets an eye full of her boyfriend’s sleaziness, and then she has to try and deal with the fallout, plus her best friend, whom she’s been planning to spend the summer with bails on her. What is a girl to do? Fall for said best friend’s beau. Yep, you got it.

Barnholdt takes us through Hannah’s first day back at school as a senior as she waits for her day to come crashing down around her while backtracking through her last day of junior year and her summer of possibilities. I think Hannah’s growth over the summer did her some good to be quite honest. She seemed timid to me but by the end of the book, she stood up for herself and took control of her life even though she had to betray her best friend to do it. Well, it just as the book says – Sometimes It Happens.

Review: The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder

THE DAY BEFORE by Lisa Schroeder
Pub. Date: June 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Format: Hardcover , 320pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Simon & Schuster Galley Grab

Amber’s life is spinning out of control. All she wants is to turn up the volume on her iPod until all of the demands of family and friends fade away. So she sneaks off to the beach to spend a day by herself. Then Amber meets Cade. Their attraction is instant, and Amber can tell he’s also looking for an escape. Together they decide to share a perfect day: no pasts, no fears, no regrets.

The more time that Amber spends with Cade, the more she’s drawn to him. And the more she’s troubled by his darkness. Because Cade’s not just living in the now—he’s living each moment like it’s his last.

As with all of Schroeder’s books, THE DAY BEFORE captured me with its poetic beauty. The words flowed across the pages and pulled me in line by line. I'm always surprised at how Schroeder continues to dazzle me with heartfelt story after story. You know what? If comes down to this: If it's a Schroeder novel, then you expect it come with beautiful prose.

I'll confess that I didn't quite remember what this book was about before I started reading it. And I'm glad that I didn't bite the bullet and read the synopsis because I ended up being completely engrossed into Amber's life. It was all so mysterious to me and I think that along with that and Schroeder’s lyrical prose, this novel ended up being more meaningful and heart rendering.

If you haven't read a Schroeder book, then I would highly recommend it. Her writing is hauntingly beautiful. She knows how to pull emotions from her readers and get you tied up into the character's lives. She's one of those writers that I can put on my list of book hits.

Review: Moonglass by Jessi Kirby

MOONGLASS by Jessi Kirby
Pub. Date: May 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Format: Hardcover , 240pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Publisher (HC)
When Anna was little, she and her mother used to search for sea glass, but since they looked at night, they called it moonglass. Now, ten years after her mother's mysterious death, her father is working as head lifeguard on the same beach where her mother grew up and her parents first met and fell in love.

Reluctant to get close to anyone (including her father) and not pleased about having to start at a new school, Anna begins to spend more time alone, running the length of the beach and wondering about who her mother really was. After meeting a lifeguard named Tyler, she slowly lets her guard down and together they start exploring the abandoned houses that dot the beach.

But when learning more about her mother's past leads to a painful discovery, Anna must reconcile her desire for solitude with ultimately accepting the love of her family and friends.
In this heart-felt debut, Kirby explores the beauty of forgiveness and making a fresh start. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to end. It was easy for to me immerse myself in the setting and follow along as Anna adjusted to a new place while trying to forget about disturbing memories from the night her mother died. I finished this book in one quick swoop.

This book was pretty much a journey of emotions as Anna tried to reconcile the night of her mother's death. There were touching, funny, and sad moments in this book. One of the things I enjoyed most about this book was the setting - serene and rocky at times which worked out perfectly in reference to everything that was going on in Anna's life.

MOONGLASS is a touching debut, one I'm sure fans of Twenty Boy Summer will enjoy. If you’re just looking for a quick summer read, this book fits right in there.

Review: Stay by Deb Caletti

STAY by Deb Caletti
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Format: Hardcover , 320pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Publisher (ARC)
Clara’s relationship with Christian is intense from the start, and like nothing she’s ever experienced before. But what starts as devotion quickly becomes obsession, and it’s almost too late before Clara realizes how far gone Christian is—and what he’s willing to do to make her stay.

Now Clara has left the city—and Christian—behind. No one back home has any idea where she is, but she still struggles to shake off her fear. She knows Christian won’t let her go that easily, and that no matter how far she runs, it may not be far enough....
Once I started reading this book, I was swept up in the whirlwind of Clara's life, and I did not want to put this book down. Love, Betrayal, and Grief are some of the emotions that were wrapped tightly around Clara. Clara's and Christian's relationship was intense and all consuming. Caletti had me believing every moment and struggle these two went through. I was simply surprised at how much I enjoyed this novel.

I loved the relationship that Clara had with her father. She could always count on him and they had this ease with each other where nothing was awkward. There were a couple of times when I had some tears sprout up at unexpected moments, which only shows how invested I was with these characters. I also loved how Caletti pulled me into Clara's story by alternating between the past and present.

This was my first Caletti novel and it won't be my last. I read this book in one sitting, that's how deeply immersed I was into Clara's life. This is one of those books that I would recommend in a heartbeat.

Sensational 7 Q & A with Jessica Warman (Author of Where the Truth Lies)!

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to hang out with your favorite author(s)? In an attempt to get a better understanding of authors, my Sensational Seven Q & A takes a closer or more personal look at these authors to give you a glimpse of the personalities behind the writing of your favorite books.

“Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the book; a personality which, by birth and quality, is pledged to the doctrines there set forth, and which exists to see and state things so, and not otherwise.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

JESSICA WARMAN is also the author of Walker's Breathless. She has an MA in creative writing and studied at prep school and Yale. She is in her twenties, a marathon runner, and a mother of two young girls. She lives in Pennsylvannia.

WHERE THE TRUTH LIES hits shelves September 28, 2010

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
I think I would go back to the year 2000, specifically the summer of 2000. It was the summer after my freshman year of college, and I’d just started dating the man who would later become my husband. I was taking a few creative writing classes for college that summer, and I lived in my first apartment all by myself. All I did was write, go on dates with my husband, and enjoy falling in love. It was probably the best time of my life, and I’d love to revisit it!

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Secrets and lies unraveling to create chaos.

Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
My favorite book is probably “Infinite Jest” by David Foster Wallace. I truly believe he’s the greatest writer of the 21st century so far. My fictional crush, no question whatsoever, is Del Sugar, the male lead in “Where the Truth Lies.” I’ve written several books about Del that follow his life from his teenage years into adulthood, and I’m completely fascinated by him. He has become almost like a real person to me. I adore him.

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?
I think I’d like to be Phoebe, Holden Caulfield’s sister in “Catcher in the Rye.” She’s so fiercely smart, even though she’s just a kid. Plus, I would love to experience having Holden for an older brother!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play thelead role as you/ Why?
That’s a tough one! Hmmm… I think my favorite actress is Kate Winslet, so maybe her? Although we look nothing alike. I’ve been told I resemble Cameron Diaz, but she seems a lot more outgoing than me. Maybe I’ll leave that one up to a casting agent…

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
Probably “Driven,” or something similar. I’ve never wanted to be anything but a writer, and from high school onward, I spent pretty much all of my free time trying to get published. I’ve been very focused about it.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Chaotic. Busy. Cynical. Introverted. Excitable. Focused. Sensitive.

Bonus:

**Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?**
Yes! I’m SO excited for the release of my third book, which will be out next year. It’s a thriller, called “Between.” It has quite a few twists and turns, and was an absolute joy to write. It has already been pretty well received – it’s been sold in ten countries! I can’t wait to see how readers respond!
