Here's a quick review of the books
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Synopsis
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival.
Quick Review
First off, this book was sitting on my shelf for a few months before I picked it up because I had no idea of what to expect. Let me just say Wow! This book was fantastic from the beginning to the end; I was so captivated that I was up all night reading this book. The plot and characters are well developed and I was mesmerized by the world that Katniss lives in. When I got to the end of the book I was like “No, I want to know what’s going to happen next.” I’ll be biting my nails waiting on the second book titled Catching Fire due out September 2009.
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Synopsis
Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight—she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug.
She never expects to fall in love with beautiful Prince Po.
She never expects to learn the truth behind her Grace—or the terrible secret that lies hidden far away . . . a secret that could destroy all seven kingdoms with words alone.
Quick Review
What a great debut novel for Kristin Cashore! The writing and imagery in this novel is fantastic and I found myself not able to put this one down. I was captivated from beginning to end. I love the characters in this book. “I want more Katsa and Po!!” At the end of the novel, I found myself wanting to read more. I can't wait to read the next novel which is the prequel to Graceling titled Fire due out October 2009.
Deadly Little Secrets by Laurie Faria Stolarz
Synopsis
Some secrets shouldn't be kept...
Up until three months ago, everything in sixteen-year-old Camelia's life had been fairly ordinary: decent grades; an okay relationship with her parents; and a pretty cool part-time job at the art studio downtown. But when Ben, the mysterious new guy, starts junior year at her high school, Camelia's life becomes anything but ordinary.
Rumored to be somehow responsible for his ex-girlfriend's accidental death, Ben is immediately ostracized by everyone on campus. Except for Camelia. She's reluctant to believe the rumors, even when her friends try to convince her otherwise. She's inexplicably drawn to Ben.and to his touch. But soon, Camelia is receiving eerie phone calls and strange packages with threatening notes. Ben insists she is in danger, and that he can help-but can he be trusted? She knows he's hiding something... but he's not the only one with a secret.
Quick Review
This was my first time reading a Laurie Stolarz novel and I’m excited about the 2nd book titled Deadly Little Lies which is due out November 2009. It's full of suspense and it kept me guessing throughout the book. This was a real page turner and I ended up reading this book in one sitting. I love Laurie's writing style and I can't wait to read more of her books. She has a series called Blue is for Nightmares that I can’t wait to start reading.
Wow! That is a phenomenal collection!
