Review: A Match Made in High School by Kristin Walker

A Match Made in High School by Kristin Walker
Pub. Date: February 2010
Publisher: Penguin Group (USA)
Format: Paperback, 288pp
Age Range: Young Adult

When the principal announces that every senior must participate in a mandatory year-long Marriage Education program, Fiona Sheehan believes that her life can't get any worse. That's until she marries her "husband": jerky jock Todd, whose cheerleader girlfriend, Amanda, has had it in for Fiona since day one of second grade. Even worse? Amanda is paired with Fiona's long-term crush, Gabe. At least Fiona is doing better than her best friend, Marcie, who is paired up with the very quiet, very dorky, very big Johnny Mercer.

Pranks, fights, misunderstandings, and reconciliations ensue in an almost Shakespearean comedy of errors about mistaken first impressions, convoluted coupling, and hidden crushes.

In the words of Fiona, A Match Made in High School is Hi-freakin’-larious!

Walker had me wrapped up in her warp world of high school with relish. I engulfed these pages like they were a special recipe. This book deposited me right back in high school. With the pranks and boorish comments, I was laughing so hard, I was sprouting tears. Fiona had me laughing about every other page. Her parents were a hoot too. I can’t imagine having to be shackled with a guy from high school that I despised. There probably would have been a riot at my school but I think this is one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much. I got to live through it through Fiona’s voice. Talk about the one liner’s in this book – HILARIOUS!

I loved the Journal entries. Fiona had me cracking up. This book should come with Warnings: Choke Alert: A Match Made in High School may cause choking especially to people who drink or eat while reading this book due to Hilarity. There were two occasions where I laughed so hard I started choking. Honestly I can’t say I knew what was expected going into reading this book since it’s totally out of my normal genre. But this book has become one of those guilty pleasures for me. There was one line about leather and a whip that had me squirting pop out my mouth. See what I mean?

Kristin managed to channel the interactions of teens today with the slang and behavior used in her book brilliantly. She did a fabulous job. Readers looking for an entertaining and twisted read inside the on goings of prankster teens will get major kicks out of this laugh out loud page turner.

  20. We had a pretty laid back high school so I think this could have gone over okay. I could easily see this being made into a movie.

  27. I usually lean more toward fantasy/sci-fi when I read the YA genre... I didn't like going to high school so reliving it doesn't seem like a fun way to spend my time. However the way you described this book made it sound amazing! : ) I love books that actually make me laugh out loud & so I'd love to get a chance to read this book. Thanks for the fun & honest review.

  28. This was a really good book! Fiona is the female lead and she is strong, and confused, and mouthy. Fiona struggles through challenges with boys and her best friends. Fiona comes out on top after all the seniors are made to "marry" in order to complete school. They must confront everything they know to come together.
